2003 Château Palmer, Cru Classé Margaux

Unlike some, Château Palmer is not claiming their earliest harvest since 1863 – this gives insight into their tremendous success in 2003. The patience of the wine-making team allowed them to start picking at a date later than was the case with the 1989 harvest (another notably hot vintage). Not only did this move encourage the full development of their Cabernet and Merlot but proved to be equally as important to Petit Verdot, which comprises 12% of the final blend. The Sichels have been heard likening this wine to the famed ’61: of that we are not sure, but it suffices to say that this is certainly one of the wines of the vintage, on part of its huge layers of textured fruit and long, harmonious yet concentrated finish. A tremendous wine.
