Slovenian Fine Wine

Drawing on a winemaking heritage that dates back over 2,000 years, Slovenia has undergone something of a vinous transformation since gaining independence in 1991. Largely driven by small, family-run producers, the focus has been on native grapes, natural winemaking and an expressive Alpine-Adriatic character, often highlighted by organic or biodynamic viticulture.

Slovenia’s three main wine regions are Primorska in the west, Podravje in the northeast, and Posavje in the southeast. Of these, Primorska, bordering Italy, is the most recognised, mainly for white wines. Of particular note is the indigenous Malvasia Istriana, an aromatic variety which, when grown on Primorska’s ‘ponca’ soils in the Vipava Valley, harnesses a pronounced mineral backbone to deliver freshness and tension via a certain flinty edge and attractive saline finish.
