Lopez de Heredia is one of Rioja's most storied names and this, their 2005 Viña Tondonia Reserva, a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, is the wine for which they're famous. It's made from their own vineyards, a rarity in the region, and aged in old oak vats as is tradition. The wine, called "exceptional" by critic Luis Gutierrez and awarded 93 points, is very well balanced, with bright fruit and energy, and a long clean finish.
