2009 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, Marqués de Murrieta, Rioja
Until 2000 Castillo Ygay was a selection of barriques from the whole estate, but since then it’s become a single vineyard wine, with the best Tempranillo and Mazuelo from La Plana. This, the 53rd release, is a beauty. The nose is exotic and generous, with notes of cumin and other exotic spices, alongside stony minerality. The old vines here (the youngest were planted in 1950) give amazing depth and concentration, while the altitude of the vineyard ensures the wine remains fresh and cool. The palate is vibrant and expansive, with dried plums, tobacco, mulberry, and still fresh fruit alongside. The tannins are silky and mouth coating. Lasting for minutes, this is a stunning wine.
