2002 Black Poplar Block Pinot Noir, Pisa Range Estate, Central Otago

When Warwick and Jenny Hawker purchased the Pisa Range Estate back in 1995 there was not a vine in sight. The land until this time had been used for grazing sheep and was sparsely covered with apricot trees. Taking a decision to focus on a single variety, Pinot Noir, they put every effort into producing one of New Zealand's finest examples. The fruit for this cuvée is sourced from the highest vineyards in the region, vineyards that enjoy hot summers, cold winters and long warm autumns – perfect for Pinot – and in 2002, a superb vintage in Central Otago, wines of great depth and abundant fruit were produced. Both nose and palate are packed with notes of dark plum, cherry and spice aromas. There is nothing forced here, just wonderful, pure fruit, perfectly ripe fruit tannins and fresh natural acidity. The 2001 vintage of this was impressive but the 2002 has an extra ounce of everything. A terrific, sophisticated Pinot Noir that will make many a Burgundian sit up and pay attention.
