Douro Wine Producers
The Douro’s wine offerings are dominated by a coterie of traditional producers, often family-owned or run, who can trace their history back several generations. Most will have started out in Port production, but today, dynamic producers such as Niepoort (founded in 1842) also craft complex, ageworthy wines from the same native grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. Fifth-generation Symington Family Estates are world leaders in Port production and own the largest vineyard area in the Douro, from which they also make non-fortified wines, as does the reputed Quinta do Noval, while the storied Casa Ferreirinha was the first to make non-fortified wines in the region.
