Rioja Wine Producers

It’s no surprise that Rioja – Spain’s most famous wine region – is also home to some of the country’s most famous wine producers. What is more surprising is that within the famous DO in the north-east of the country, you’ll find venerable stalwarts such as La Rioja Alta and CVNE cheek by jowl with modern bodegas such as Muga and Remírez de Ganuza. Often, a producer’s heritage is reflected in their style of wine – Muga, for example, is known for modern, powerful renderings, while a more traditional name such as R López de Heredia produces wines that are lauded for their almost limitless ageability. Meanwhile, two other Rioja institutions who nonetheless take a more contemporary outlook are the two Marques – de Riscal and de Murrieta, each founded in the 1850s, but today, notably forward-looking in their approach.
