Vasse Felix
When cardiologist Tom Cullity set out to plant vines in the then virgin territory of Margaret River in the late 1960s, most of the locals thought him mad. He was certainly ambitious – and not a little eccentric – but his vision and determination led to him creating the pioneering Vasse Felix, the region’s first wine estate, in 1967.
Today, much like Napa Valley is to California, Margaret River is responsible for a relatively small amount (3%) of Australia’s overall output, but an oversized part of the country’s fine wine reputation. And Vasse Felix continues to blaze a trail, typical in focusing particularly on Bordeaux blends and Chardonnay, as seen in its most premium wines, the Tom Cullity and Heytesbury, respectively.
