Dr. Loosen

Dr. Loosen is one of the most influential estates in the Mosel and a benchmark for Riesling worldwide. The Loosen family has been rooted in the region for over 200 years, but the estate’s modern reputation is inseparable from Ernst “Erni” Loosen, who assumed control in 1988. His focus has been on reducing yields, avoiding chemical inputs, championing old-vine material, and moving towards gentler, more terroir-sensitive cellar practices. While the estate continues to craft pristine examples of the classic Prädikat ladder – Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese and beyond – Loosen has focused particularly on reviving the reputation of dry Mosel Riesling, notably the Grosses Gewächs bottlings from its top sites. His influence has seen him widely recognised – among Decanter’s Hall of Fame, for example – and today, Dr. Loosen stands as both guardian and innovator – an estate that has redefined Mosel Riesling for the modern era while staying rooted in centuries-old vineyards.
