Mazzei
The Mazzei family has been a leading light in Tuscany across six centuries and 25 generations. Today it remains rooted where its journey began back in 1435 – Castello di Fonterutoli, one of the most storied names of Chianti Classico. The estate stretches over a total of 650 hectares, of which 110 are planted to vineyards. Sangiovese reigns supreme, yielding aromatic elegance in the higher areas, such as Badiola, and structure and strength in the lower ones, such as Vicoregio. It is these sites that are today harnessed to produce acclaimed single-vineyard wines, along with the Castello Fonterutoli Gran Selezione bottling. A cru of Sangiovese from the best parcels surrounding the Fonterutoli hamlet, the wine is something of a forerunner to the Gran Selezione category, having been first produced in 1995.
In more recent years, the Mazzei family expanded to Sicily, purchasing the Zisola property in the island’s southwest corner in 2002, with a focus on the native Nero d’Avola grape.
