Comando G
Comando G is a winery with an unusual name and an even more eye-catching story, driving one of the most inspiring wine renaissance stories of the last 20 years. For years, growers in the Sierra de Gredos mountain range – rising out of the high plains between Madrid and Salamanca – sold their wines off in bulk at low prices. Growers gave up, vineyards were left abandoned. But the pair behind Comando G, Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia, could see the region’s amazing potential. Why, they wondered, were these high-altitude mountain vineyards, stocked with ancient Garnacha bush vines, not attracting a premium?
Little by little, working with plots perched high up in the Sierra – around 1,000m – they began to give the old vineyards the love and attention they craved and to make the wines they deserved. Not that they’re remotely doing it the easy way. Vineyards, farmed organically or biodynamically, are tended by hand and ploughed by horse. Stylistically, too, the wines reference an older time. Unfined and unfiltered, they wear their complexity lightly, with a pale, chalky elegance that has wooed sommeliers and collectors all over Europe. Authentic and artisanal, these wines will appeal to anyone who likes Barolo or Burgundy – and a feel-good story.
