Italian Sangiovese
Though occasional examples can be found in other parts of the world, Sangiovese is very much Italy’s own grape variety. Indeed it is the most planted of the 500+ varieties that can be found in the country. And in particular, it is very much Tuscany’s grape variety. The sole variety permitted in all Brunello di Montalcino, and the dominant grape in Chianti Classico and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, its savoury, sour-cherry character lends itself to refreshing, elegant but supremely ageworthy renderings. High in acidity with firm tannins, it’s an adaptable variety that allows for the full expression of the character of vineyard and vintage, thus giving rise to great nuance and complexity among its finest examples.
