Antinori
The Antinori family has been a bastion of the Tuscan wine trade for an astonishing 26 generations, dating back to the 14th century. And while in the last half century it has become best known for its supremely coveted and critically acclaimed ‘SuperTuscan’ cuvées, the house ‘s core production revolves around its base of Chianti Classico. It was in 1971 that the pioneering Piero Antinori helped changed the course of history by making a wine that was ineligible for the official Chianti classification – the single-vineyard Tignanello, incorporating non-native grape varieties, notably Cabernet Sauvignon. While it was not the first SuperTuscan, Tignanello played a huge role in shaking up the Italian wine scene, its success soon followed by the creation of the similarly non-conformist and reputed Solaia. Today the family, now headed by Piero’s three daughters, produce a wide range of bottlings, from Chianti Classico to SuperTuscan, and several in between, including Vermentino, Cabernet Franc and more.
