Tuscany Vintages
Vintages in Tuscany tend to be judged by the quality of the region’s three leading wines – Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico and the ‘SuperTuscans’ of Bolgheri. Each of these wines is intended to age, developing further nuance and complexity as it does so, with the best capable of evolving over decades. Like Bordeaux, then, some vintages take on legendary status – the SuperTuscans of 1985 and 1988, for instance, and 1999 across most of the region. In this century, 2004, 2006 and 2007 are coveted years, while the 2010s of Montalcino are fast acquiring exalted status. More recently, 2013 was well-received, especially in Montalcino, 2016 in Chianti, while 2018 and 2019 seemed to excel across the region.
